Robert Stroud was a violent murderer sentenced to hang 3 times, each delayed on appeal. He finally got life imprisonment, in Leavenworth prison, 1920, in solitary confinement. He started caring for 3 injured sparrows. Supposedly, eventually, he had hundreds of birds in his cell, and he became famous as a result. He was then transferred to Alcatraz. Alcatraz allowed no pets. Hence, no birds.
He was a diagnosed psychopath, had an IQ of 112, was previously a pimp, killed a bartender, and he also killed a prison guard.
